From Dnews.com:

Pullman police are investigating an early morning shooting on College Hill.

Police report that a man was taken to Pullman Regional Hospital early this morning after being shot in the head by an acquaintance at the Providence Court Apartments.

Pullman Police Cmdr. Chris Tennant said the 22-year-old Pullman resident suffered non- life threatening injuries and was able to lead detectives to a suspect.

A 20-year-old man was taken into custody in Moscow after crossing state lines.

And from the AP:

Pullman Police Commander Chris Tennant said 20-year-old Lewis A. Lawrence was being held in the Latah County Jail as the suspected shooter.

The shooting victim, Michael Fuauu, 22, was recovering in the hospital.

Tennant said police were called to the Providence Court apartments at the bottom of Valley Road for a gunshot wound a little after 12:30 a.m. There they found Fuauu suffering from a shotgun blast to the head.

Tennant said Fuauu had reportedly answered the door and was shot. He said police were told the alleged shooter was an acquaintance of Fuauu’s. Fuauu and witnesses identified the alleged shooter.

Tennant said formal arrest warrants were issued out of Whitman County charging Lawrence with three counts of attempted murder and one count of first-degree burglary. Wallace’s arrest warrant is for one count of rendering criminal assistance in the first degree.

Both men appeared in Latah County Magistrate Court Tuesday afternoon and waived extradition. Prosecutor Bill Thompson said they would be transferred to Whitman County within 24 hours.

Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson win

Well our facebook prediction model failed us this year. With the top two tickets only being 100 supporters apart on their facebook groups we knew it was going to be a squeaker (turned out it wasn’t) unlike years past. Congratulations to Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson

update:
Here are the numbers
Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson 2129 votes 48%

Jake Bredstrand and Molly Aigner 1450 votes 33%

Ryan Mulenga and Sarah Driscoll 862 votes 19%

Interestingly if you check on the candidates facebook group pages all of them have less members then they did just a day ago. Even the winning ticket’s group has less people.

Cougster predicts Jake and Molly win ASWSU election

For the last few years Cougster has accurately predicted the winner of the ASWSU election. Along with getting the winners correct we have been predicting the percentage of the vote each ticket will receive pretty well. We make our predictions based on the number people on each tickets’ facebook group page.

Once again here is our prediction for this year.

As of this morning there are combined total of 2476 members of the three tickets’ facebook groups. We divide the numbers of members in each individual group by the total number of members in all the groups so x/2476

Ryan Mulenga and Sarah Driscoll: 381 members = 15.39%

Jake Bredstrand and Molly Aigner: 1100 members = 44.43%

Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson: 995 members = 40.19%

Based on these numbers we predict Jake Bredstrand and Molly Aigner will win with 44.43% of the vote.

Of course you never know what is going to happen so you should vote if you have not done so yet.

Here are the websites of the candidates:

The paradigm lives, eFloyd is back!

Well one month ago we posted about WSU President Elson Floyd’s blog being a ghost town after his initial post over a year and half ago. Back in the fall of 2007 we noted how the first post was not to promising and linked to another blog that called eFloyd connects “completely devoid of any substance.”

We had to agree and it turned out to be on the money as there were no more posts after that as far as we remember.

So it comes as a surprise that as of yesterday eFloyd has a new post! Thanks Cougster contributor goodies for letting us know in Cougster fourms.

It seems after our post last month poking fun at the complete lack of content President Elson Floyd or his underlings read Cougster and decided to take a second shot at participating in the blogosphere (yeah we will take credit for it being started again).

In his new post President Floyd asks readers to submit their questions or concerns.

In an effort to keep you posted on major issues affecting Washington State University, I have initiated this format to field your questions and concerns. I look forward to hearing from you.

There are no questions or concerns in the comment section yet.

We don’t want to start ripping on President Floyd right away but at least change the look of the blog from the default wordpress theme. We are sure you could call up some people in IT to get that done right away or hey you could email us!

Fmr NY Gov Spitzer wants to change way college is paid for

eliot_spitzer
Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer thinks the way college is financed currently is crazy. He says the costs are prohibitive for many and proposes using ideas from the likes of Nobel laureates Milton Friedman and James Tobin.

Spitzer suggests students repay a percentage of their income, not set payments.

the concept is simple: Instead of paying upfront or taking loans with repayment schedules unrelated to income, students would accept an obligation to pay a fixed percentage of their income for a specified period of time, regardless of the income level achieved. Suppose a university charged $40,000 a year in annual tuition. A standard 20-year loan in the amount of $160,000 (40,000 times four) would produce an immediate postgraduate debt obligation of $1,228.50 per month, or $14,742 per year, not sustainable at a salary of $25,000 or anything close to it. Under a smart loan program, the student could pay about 11 percent of his income, with an initial payback of $243 per month, or $2,916 per year, which is feasible at a job paying $25,000. If, after five years, the student’s salary jumped to $100,000, payments would jump accordingly and move up over time as income increases. After 20 years, assuming ordinary income increase, the loan would be paid off.

We are sure art and psych majors could get behind this idea.

Timothy Leary was a Coug!

timothy-leary
When Reading a post on dutchproblogger.com entitled Internet is the new LSD we learned something surprising, Timothy Leary was a Coug! The controversial writer and advocate of psychedelic drug research earned a masters degree at WSU in 1946. Leary is famous for the phrase Turn on, tune in, drop out which was meant to promote the benefits of LSD for some purposes. Leary later explained that he didn’t mean that people should just get stoned and do nothing. Still we imagine he probably did some partying while living in Pullman (any alum from back then remember his time at WSU?)

If you know of other persons that attended WSU but most people don’t know it (or at least we didn’t) let us know at admin (at) cougster (dot) com.

Tell key legislators your opinion on Husky Stadium funding

Over on uwdowgpound they have a list of key legislators who are part of the King County Projects Financing Task Force. This task force reviews King County-specific revenue options for community development in the county. They look at the funding of construction, financing and mitigation of Safeco and Quest Fields and financing of the Kingdome debt.

For Husky Stadium to be considered for any Public Funding, this Task Force must recommend the Project to the appropriate Legislative Committee by December 1, 2008.

These are the members:
• Ross Hunter, Representative (District 48)
• Tracey Eide, Senator (District 30)
• Sharon Tomiko-Santos, Representative (District 37)
• Ed Murray, Senator (District 43)
• Joe Zarelli, Senator (District 18)
• Glenn Anderson, Representative (District 5)
• Marty Brown, the Governor’s Office

Needless to say we know how the posters on uwdawgpound said to their legislators. So if anyone of these is your representative/senator why not give them a quick call or email and tell them how you feel about funding Husky Stadium with tax payer dollars.
