WSU Prof accused of shoplifting

Professor Paul Verrell is accused of shoplifting from ShopKo Thursday. From Dnews.com:
Police allege that Paul A. Verrell, 50, an associate professor of biology, was spotted by security staff at the South Grand Avenue store after looking at several sets of earrings and swallowing them, said Police Cmdr. Chris Tennant.

He added that the swallowed earrings were believed to be a mismatched set.

Police arrived on scene shortly after 4 p.m. and contacted Verrell, Tennant said. Verrell allegedly was also wearing a necklace that later was determined to be stolen from the store. He reportedly returned more than $250 worth of stolen jewelry during the investigation.

It is always a wonder why people with good jobs and reputations steal such pretty crap.

Pullman City Attorney Laura McAloon hates students?

…or doesn’t understand basic economics. Why do we say this? Because of her quote in the Moscow-Pullman Daily News story on the Pullman Police Officers’ Guild opposition to the proposed U-District. In the story she says:

McAloon said Pullman’s limited tax base is "based on a much smaller population than Pullman has," and WSU should help provide law enforcement since its students make up a majority of the population but don’t help pay the cost to provide city services.

Now clearly she has a grudge against students or she needs to come up to the university and takes some econ classes. Students do pay taxes and for the most part do not use social services. First how does she think landlords pay property taxes on all the houses and apartments in Pullman? They don’t, they just collect them from students in the form of rent. If property taxes go up, who do you think is going to pay them? Students will in higher rent. Of course students buy stuff and pay sales taxes also.

Now lets look at what students take from the city? Well most students do not have kids so they are not costing the city/school district any money but they are paying in to the system. Students are not going to be using most of the social services and since they are younger they generally are not going to be using any medical facilities that often. Of course students are more likely to have interaction with the police because of their age. Then again they will be paying a ton of fines, for MIPs and other offenses. That 5 minutes the Pullman Police Officer took to write you a citation for the heinous crime of drinking on your buddy’s front porch means you will be forced to donate a few hundred dollars to city.

Does Pullman City Attorney Laura McAloon really think Pullman would be better off with out the nearly 20,000 students who spend their money in shops and restaurants that make up the city’s tax base?

WSU students and Pullman Police on the same side (for now)

The proposed U-District has drawn a lot of opposition from students. The university is already a Big Brother in a lot of ways (and not in the mentoring good way) and they are opposed to it having an increased role in their lives. The students are getting an unexpected ally in their fight, the Pullman Police Officers’ Guild. Seems their self interest aligns, at least for now, with the interest of many students. The Guild sees the expansion of WSU authority as a threat to their jobs, if WSU officers take over it might mean less work for Pullman Police.

From the Dnews.com:

The Pullman Police Officers’ Guild has threatened legal action against the City Council if it enters into an agreement with Washington State University that would "allow the university police department to morph outside their boundaries."
Guild attorney Mark Makler recently sent letters to Pullman officials opposing an interlocal agreement for the proposed University District on College Hill.
Makler said language in the proposal dictating shared work between the city and university police departments is unlawful. He plans to file an administrative lawsuit with the Public Employees Relations Commission if the city signs an agreement that doesn’t include additional bargaining with the Pullman guild.
"The WSU police are not going to be policing on Kamiaken (Street) and Grand (Avenue.) But they are going to come out on College Hill," he said. "It hasn’t gotten agreement from the police guild that someone else can work within the police guild’s territory.
"What stops WSU from policing the whole city?"
Guild President Scott Patrick agreed.
"However semantically the university wants to put it or the city administration wants to put it … they’re contracting out bargained work, and you have to bargain for that," he said of the proposal.

Funny how the people who generally are not students’ friends, the Pullman PD, are in this case are because of self interest.

Were are #1…8….

WSU has been ranked #18 by Entrepreneur magazine. Now school ratings in many ways are just educated guesses prone to manipulation, but hey we would rather be rated #18 than say #19!
