ASWSU election do over

With the Judicial Board invalidating the results of the ASWSU executive election there is going to be a new election April 23 and 24th. It is likely that the winners Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson will just win again.
Here were the results from the election:

Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson 2129 votes 48%

Jake Bredstrand and Molly Aigner 1450 votes 33%

Ryan Mulenga and Sarah Driscoll 862 votes 19%

If the other two tickets want a shot at beating Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson they are going to have to make a deal that sees just one ticket facing off against the previous winners. Even this might not work as Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson already have the momentum and the advantage as already being seen as winners. One might think they would offer one of the losing tickets positions in their administration just to be safe.

One item of note is that Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson is the only ticket who doesn’t still have their website up.

Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson win

Well our facebook prediction model failed us this year. With the top two tickets only being 100 supporters apart on their facebook groups we knew it was going to be a squeaker (turned out it wasn’t) unlike years past. Congratulations to Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson

update:
Here are the numbers
Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson 2129 votes 48%

Jake Bredstrand and Molly Aigner 1450 votes 33%

Ryan Mulenga and Sarah Driscoll 862 votes 19%

Interestingly if you check on the candidates facebook group pages all of them have less members then they did just a day ago. Even the winning ticket’s group has less people.

Cougster predicts Jake and Molly win ASWSU election

For the last few years Cougster has accurately predicted the winner of the ASWSU election. Along with getting the winners correct we have been predicting the percentage of the vote each ticket will receive pretty well. We make our predictions based on the number people on each tickets’ facebook group page.

Once again here is our prediction for this year.

As of this morning there are combined total of 2476 members of the three tickets’ facebook groups. We divide the numbers of members in each individual group by the total number of members in all the groups so x/2476

Ryan Mulenga and Sarah Driscoll: 381 members = 15.39%

Jake Bredstrand and Molly Aigner: 1100 members = 44.43%

Derick En’Wezoh and Jay Hendrickson: 995 members = 40.19%

Based on these numbers we predict Jake Bredstrand and Molly Aigner will win with 44.43% of the vote.

Of course you never know what is going to happen so you should vote if you have not done so yet.

As predicted Scheller/Fry-pierce win

As we predicted Scheller/Fry-pierce won the ASWSU presidency/vice presidency. So how did our prediction of the percentage that each ticket would get turn out? Our prediction was somewhat close but not as spot on like we were last year. Here are the numbers:

   Scheller/Fry-Pierce  Davis/Lambert
# of people in FB Group  (as of  12.01 am 3-04-08)  529 270+22 = 292
%of vote predicted based on total # of people in all groups  (821)  64% 36%
 Actual # of votes recieved (2014 total) and percentage of actual vote  1456 = 72% 558 = 28%

Needless to say this year’s race wasn’t even close. It also had a very low turnout. Over 1100 less people voted this year than last year. The transit measure which was $15 fee for full time students and $7 for part-time students passed by 56%-44% the total votes being just a little more than the Pres/Vp race with 2047 votes cast, 1,140-907.

UPDATE: The grad students didn’t pass the transit fee so it will not be implimented. They voted 205-251 against it.

Cougster predicts Scheller/Fry-Pierce win ASWSU Pres/Vp

Last year before the ASWSU election Cougster predicted the winners and percentage of the vote for the presidential race. Our predictions turned out to be nearly spot on. So we are doing it again. Based purely on the facebook we predict Scheller/Fry-Pierce the winners.

Here is how we get that and the percentage of the vote:

Presidential Tickets Scheller/Fry-Pierce Davis/Lambert
# of people in FB Group  (as of  12.01 am 3-04-08) 529 270 + 22 = 292
%of vote predicted based on total # of people in all groups  (821) 64% 36%

Last time we also looked at how many friends each candidate had but we can’t see how many friends Leslie Lambert has (if you know tell us) so will skip that for now. Grace Davis has 538 friends listed at WSU. Brandon Scheller has 521 and Adam Fry-pierce has 546. It is interesting how Davis has almost twice as many friends listed at WSU than members of the vote Davis/Lambert groups. The Fresh Four have 282 friends in their group but of course they were disqualified. We at Cougster have had our own experience with the election board and the judicial board. Let’s just say we were not fans of them in the past. We hope the Fresh Four will try again next year but if they want to win, they will need to settle on 2 people and get on the ballot. Overall we think this is a mediocre year and are not impressed with any of the tickets.

Now voting is super simple and easy to do so you should still vote despite our predictions, epecially if you are for Davis/Lambert.  Heck scoring an upset and proving us wrong would make a great story….

As predicted Webster/Simmons win

So Kasey Webster and Tommy Simmons win. How close did the results mirror the percentage of people in their facebook group? Pretty close.

   Kirk/Del Beccaro Webster/Simmons Fortunato/Wingfield
 # of people in candidates’ group on facebook  394 622 208
%of vote predicted based on total # of people in all groups. (x/1224)   32.19%  50.82%  17%
 Actual # of votes recieved 1040 1497 621
 percentage of actual vote 32.9% 47.4% 19.7%

Cougster predicts Webster & Simmons Win ASWSU race

So who is going to win the ASWSU race? Well it all come down to popularity (issues, yeah right). So Cougster is going to call the race right now for Kasey Webster and Tommy Simmons. We base our prediction purely on the facebook. We are not backing anyone.

Here are the numbers:

from facebook on Tuesday night 3/6/07 Kirk/Del Beccaro   Webster/Simmons  Fortunato/Wingfield
combinded # of friends (at WSU) on personal pages    163+185= 348  285+382= 667   101+236= 337
 # of people in candidates’ group on facebook  394  622  208

%of vote predicted based on total # of people in all groups. (x/1224)  32.19%  50.82%  17%

Interesting to see how 2 of the tickets have more people listed as friends than people in their group.

We didn’t count the write in ticket of Phil and Johannes for ASWSU 07-08 (President & VP).
Their facebook group found here has 214 members.

Now of course you should still vote no matter what we predict. If you don’t know any of the people go to their webpages (see a few post below this) and see who you think has the best platform.

Our take on the ASWSU Pres/VP candidates

The ASWSU election is almost here so we decided to take another look at the issues the Pres/VP candidates are running on. Here is our quick thoughts on them. In no particular order.

Chris Del Beccaro & Mike Kirk
http://www.votedk.com/issues.html

What we liked
Advocating telephones back in the dorm rooms. Not everyone has cell phones (and even if you do it doesn’t always work) taking the phones out is a real pain in the ass for some students.
Opposing Parking Permits for College Hill.
Not a clear cut issue but overall students don’t need more tickets.

What we didn’t like
Too many issues, realistically not really going to be able to do something about them all. Over promising makes you look like nearly ever other ticket in history.

Kasey Webster & Tommy Simmons
http://www.votekaseyandtommy.com/issues.html

What we liked
The idea of a concert pass is interesting and might work if done right…though it must be said the claim that the pass would let student see “numerous A-list artists throughout the school for only $40” is way over promising and clearly not possible.

What we didn’t like
A lack of specifics. On most of the issues they just they will work well with other groups. How about actually standing for something?

Joe Fortunato & Ryan Wingfield
http://www.voteforwing.com/issues.html/

What we liked

Their highlighting the impact the Washington State legislature has on tuition.

What we didn’t like
Um do you have any issues? You say that some student government leaders need to be aware that students “…pull all-nighters and like to kick back on the weekends after studying hard all week.” Now we don’t agree with some of the people on ASWSU but we are pretty sure that they all know students pull all-nighters and like to kick back on weekends. Say what you will about Zach Wurtz, but it is not like the guy hasn’t been to party in his life.

You also say “We want to bring ASWSU back to the students.”
Ok…this is said every year…how about telling us HOW you plan to do this?

Update: A  supporter of Fortunato and Wing emailed a link to a story in the Evergreen which he says gives one a better idea of what they stand for. Read it here and judge for yourself.

ASWSU blows $8,000 on retreat for themselves!

{mosimage}
Apparently the ASWSU likes to spend a lot of your money for them to bond. Did you know they spent $8,000 on a retreat for themselves?? Compare that with say Cougfest, which is for all students, where they spent only $4,000! We are all for the ASWSU having a retreat but spending $8,000 on it is an outrage.

We have last year’s ASWSU budget showing what committees got how much and what they spent it on. Find out where your money is going. See the two files, ASWSU programming budget 2005-06 and ASWSU Admin Exec budget 2005-06 in the Cougster Files in the WSU General folder. See if you think they are spending your money wisely.
